Torishima also worked on the TV series adaptation of Blue Dragon, a video game with characters designed by Akira Toriyama. In 2011, he produced the anime adaptation of Naho Ooishi's Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock. In 2004, he joined Shueisha's board of directors. In 2001, Torishima was the head editor of Weekly Shōnen Jump, Monthly Jump, and V-Jump.

Under his leadership, the magazine began coming out with new hits like Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece, and Naruto. In 1996, shortly after Dragon Ball ended, he became editor-in-chief of the Weekly Shōnen Jump. Slump, by Akira ToriyamaĪfter he left as Toriyama's editor, Kazuhiko Torishima went on to become head editor of V-Jump in 1993. Mashirito and Piccolo can fuse to form a character whose special ability is yelling at his opponent. A reference to this is made in the video game Jump Super Stars, in which Dr. Mashirito (they have the same name but with the syllables reversed) and King Piccolo. He is said to be Toriyama's inspiration for the villainous Dr. Torishima was involved with Toriyama's work for the Dr. He was impressed by Toriyama's particular lettering and onomatopoeia similar to that of the Western comics. Kazuhiko Torishima recruited Akira Toriyama after the latter made it to the final of the Monthly Young Jump Award 1978 with a one-shot titled Mysterious Rain Jack. The same year, he joined Shueisha editorial department and was assigned to the Weekly Shōnen Jump. Torishima attended high school in Ojiya, and graduated from Keio University in 1976. "You can have the protagonist grow up, just do not scare me like that," I said." (laughs) It was terrible, breaching the subject like that. Toriyama-sensei threatened that if Goku did not grow up, then he could not continue with serialization. But the result was that the smaller size actually suited the voice of Shōko Nakagawa- san, who voiced the Oracle Fish, so I think it was fine." The thing I felt was the biggest crisis for serialization was when he told me that Goku would grow up.

I hadn’t made a size-comparison chart for the anime staff in advance, so I supposed it couldn’t be helped. When I first saw the visuals for the Oracle Fish, I felt that its size was even smaller than I had thought. The one show that determined that anime was okay to watch and enjoy in.

I’ve also tried to bring out two at a time as much as possible in my other works, as well. Dragon Ball Z - Super Saiya Densetsu (Legend of the Super Saiyans). The design ended up being one I like quite a bit.Īs for why I wanted to bring out a set of two new characters, rather than just one, is because with two, you can introduce what sort of personality they have through their conversation, so you don’t have to rely on narration.

I should bring out a sense that he’s not your typical handsome fella, but has some peculiarities about him. Whis, I designed because I wanted to bring out a handsome-fella sort of character. I think he should have a sense of being scary, but with gaps in it. I made him feel as though he doesn’t look strong at first glance. In addition to that, I’ve given his costume an ancient-Egyptian motif. Initially, nothing came to mind that was human, so I modeled him on the cat we keep as a pet. This time, there are breaks in that fear, or rather, I felt that he simply had to be a character where you could feel his humanity. I’d done plenty up to now that were just scary, after all. I simply wanted to go with designs that I hadn’t done before.
